3 Things My Clients Say Before Their Family Portrait Session

Writer: Bianca Jo Bianca Jo

It can be overwhelming to plan a family portrait session. From coordinating schedules to ensuring everyone looks their best, there are numerous factors to consider. Here are three things my clients say before their family portrait session:

These are things my clients say before their family portrait session.

1. I don't know what to wear

Choosing the right outfits for a family portrait can be a daunting task. Moms often worry about how to coordinate colors and styles without being too matchy-matchy. They want everyone to look good. Additionally, considering the comfort of the kids is essential, as unhappy children can lead to less-than-ideal photos.

This is why I give my clients a style guide that helps them choose a color palette that lets them look connected but they can still allows them to choose outfits that fit their personality in whichever season. If they are undecided, have them send me the options, and I will give my suggestions based on what I know will photograph well together. This takes the stress out of planning and is more enjoyable for the whole family.

2. What if my kids don't cooperate?

Another major concern is the behavior of the children during the session. Moms often worry about how their kids will act in front of the camera. Will they cooperate? Will they smile? The fear of having a meltdown or an uncooperative child can weigh heavily on a mom's mind. This concern can make the idea of a family portrait session seem more like a chore than a fun experience.

But that's where I come in!

I love making my sessions about having fun together as a family and letting kids play during the session. I ask about the ages and plan age-appropriate family activities so they can enjoy bonding while I freeze those moments you can keep forever! I have yet to have a little one interact with me without getting smiles. They may start the session that way, but they don't stay that way.

Parents tend to get frustrated when kids don't cooperate, but my suggestion is to keep emotions as joyful as possible (unless there are necessary moments of danger or hurting others). Staying in a positive mood will help relax the kids. I will see the situation and try to move to a different activity that will work with the energy I see in the kids.

3. I don't know why it costs so much.

Cost is a significant factor that can weigh heavily on parents' minds when planning a family portrait session. Many wonder if they are getting good value for their investment. Concerns about hidden fees, the quality of the photographer, and the potential for additional costs (like prints or digital files) can create anxiety. Parents often seek budget-friendly options without compromising quality, making pricing a crucial aspect of their decision-making process.

But what makes a great photographer who can deliver a great experience and quailty images and products?

Skill

A great photographer knows not only the technical aspects of capturing images and poses but also what goes into the experience that makes you forget you're being photographed. Capturing moments showcases connection and joy and provides you with great products that you can display in your home and remember the beauty that is your family. The price is an investment in your family. Having printed portraits in your home shows you belong to a family that loves you. Printing them with quality labs determines how long those images last and won't be forgotten on a computer, possibly lost.

4. I love it (while wiping away tears)

Despite these concerns, family portrait sessions can be a wonderful way to capture cherished memories. With a little planning and preparation, I can help moms ease their worries and create a beautiful family keepsake.

What really brings me joy is when I have a family who comes to me with these concerns and I have done my job to comfort those concerns and help them through the process so when they recevie their images they forget the price and all their concerns and are filled with joy and love looking at how I captured their family.
